Side event, 25 October: Human rights defenders more than ever threatened.

On 25 October, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (OMCT-FIDH), the International Service for Human Rights, and the Norwegian Mission to the United Nations will be holding a public panel discussion entitled ‘Human rights defenders more than ever threatened’ in New York.

 

On 25 October, the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (OMCT-FIDH), the International Service for Human Rights, and the Norwegian Mission to the United Nations will be holding a public panel discussion entitled ‘Human rights defenders more than ever threatened’ in New York.

This event will focus both on the Annual Report 2011 of the Observatory and the report to the 66th session of the General Assembly by the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders, Ms Margaret Sekaggya, who will be one of the key speakers during the discussion.

The session will feature a high-level panel of experts including: 

  • Mr Gerald Staberock, the Secretary General, World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT)
  • Ms Souhayr Belhassen, President, International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH)
  • Mr Luis Arriaga, Former Director, Agustín Pro Juárez Human Rights Center (PRODH Center)
  • Ms Justine Masika Bihamba, Coordinator, NGO “Women’s Synergy for the Victims of Sexual Violence” (SFVS) Democratic Republic of Congo
  • and a member of OMCT General Assembly, Mexico

The panel will be moderated by Ms Tine Mørch Smith, the Deputy Permanent Representative, Norwegian Mission to the United Nations.

The event will be held in the Diplomat Ballroom of the Millennium UN Plaza Hotel in New York between 3pm and 5pm, local time.
