With her NGO Red por la infancia, Paula Wachter advocates for women’s and children’s rights in Argentina. She lobbies and negotiates with policy makers and authorities to push for legal reform.

Last June, Paula participated in our Human Rights Defender Advocacy Programme, which brought some of the world’s brightest and most engaged defenders for two weeks of intensive training, network building and advocacy at the United Nations in Geneva.

Click on the video below to hear what Paula thinks of our programme, and click here to make a donation and support scholarships for other courageous advocates to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity too.

“Because of the work they do, human rights defenders face many challenges and threats in Argentina, at the hands of both State and non-State actors,” says Paula. “Women human rights defenders are also exposed to gendered-based discrimination and stereotypes.”

On International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, we invite you to reflect and pay tribute to the brave people who stand up to defend women’s rights and the rights to gender equality. Women’s rights are human rights. Every woman has the right to live a life free from violence, poverty and discrimination. What better way to celebrate this day than helping more brave women defenders take part into our 2018 Human Rights Defender Advocacy Programme?

Our programme is unique in its design and objectives. It has a real impact on the ground – and our alumni are the ones who express this best. Take Paula’s example: “My advocacy at the UN started as soon as I joined the programme at ISHR,” she told us. “ISHR provided me not only with the technical tools to effectively engage with all UN mechanisms, but also with the support I needed to be active in this role. Thanks to ISHR, I have been participating into the pre-sessions of Argentina’s Universal Periodic Review – only two months after completing the programme – and I have contributed to the adoption of the revised law on sexual abuse in Argentina.”

Big or small, your donation will help. Here’s how…

Please invest in the future of human rights. Please support a women defender and contribute to transformative human rights change today.
