The vital role of migrant rights defenders – and the obligation of States to respect, protect, facilitate and not obstruct their work – has been recognised by a number of UN human rights bodies. Yet an increasing number of States are imposing legal or other restrictions on the work of migrant rights defenders. ISHR’s Director Phil Lynch outlined the situation and the path forward at a side event today.


The upcoming review of the UN’s human rights treaty bodies in 2020 provides an opportunity to increase the impact that these mechanisms have on States’ implementation of their human rights commitments. Yet the review is poised to take place at a time of great challenge to the international human rights system.
