Martin Ennals Award goes to Syrian human rights defender PDF Print E-mail

Muhannad Al-Hassani, a Syrian lawyer who has bravely defended human rights and challenged the oppressive legal framework imposed by the Syrian Government was awarded the 2010 MEA on 7 May 2010. He is the President of the Syrian Organization for Human Rights (Swasiya), a leading human rights organisation that has been denied official registration by the Syrian authorities for the past six years.  The press release in English, French, Spanish, German and Arabic is available on the Martin Ennals website.

 

ISHR is part of the jury and plays a key role in selecting and nominating awardees. Other jury members include Human Rights Watch, Front Line, and the ICJ. The awardee of the Martin Ennals Award is granted at least 20,000 Swiss Francs (circa 20,000 US dollars) to be used for further work in the field of human rights.


The 2010 Award will be presented on 15 October during the annual ceremony jointly organised by the Martin Ennals Foundation and the Ville de Genève.
