10 December marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and is today celebrated around the world as Human Rights Day. This year a worldwide campaign has been launched by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms Navanetham Pillay, under the theme non-discrimination to mark the 61st anniversary of the UDHR.
In her official statement on Human Rights Day, Ms Pillay highlights the importance of the international and domestic legal frameworks that recognise the principle of non-discrimination and the efforts by States to give effect to this. At the same time she draws attention to rampant discrimination against women, minorities, indigenous peoples, migrants, refugees, persons with disabilities, stateless people, gays and lesbians, members of particular castes and the elderly as well as against persons because of their race or religion or belief.
The High Commissioner encourages everyone ‘to honour Human Rights Day 2009 by embracing diversity and resolving to take concrete and lasting actions to help put an end to discrimination’. Her full statement is available here.
