The African Commission's 44th session was held in Abuja, Nigeria. The African Commission considered the periodic reports of Nigeria and Madagascar. It also received reports from the special mechanisms of the African Commission, including the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders. NGO Forum
The NGO Forum preceding the 44th session of the African Commission was held from 7 to 9 November in Abuja, Nigeria. The NGO Forum discussed developments in the human rights situation in Africa, the situation of human rights defenders, developments in the work of the Human Rights Council, and the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. During the NGO Forum, the International Service for Human Rights held a workshop with the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders of the African Commission on the 10th anniversary of the UN Declaration on human rights defenders, assessing the extent of its implementation and discussing future strategies. The Forum adopted 24 resolutions that will be forwarded to the African Commission for its consideration. The resolutions deal with a large number of themes including children's rights, human rights of women, torture, the death penalty, and human rights defenders as well as the human rights situations in Mauritania, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gambia, Somalia, the Sudan, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe.
